A little bit of Search and Rescue training and some wandering in the bush

We [Wanaka Search and Rescue] had our annual helicopter familiarisation and training last night in readiness for the summer season. I always hope it’ll be quiet, but it seldom is in these days of increasing use of the outdoors.

The pilots, a husband and wife team, now have a family and just to reassure you the machine in this photo is stationary and shut-down while our team members check out the doors and how best to get in and out on level ground, before we practise on steeper slopes nearby.

We did yell out to a surprised Dave to “mind the child” as he stepped down, and interestingly enough it signaled to us all how it’s important to be very aware off all goings on around a machine…

Making eye contact with the helicopter as it comes in with another load. It’s actually touched down and the exercise is to get in and out safely considering the big step down!

On a more sobering tone re Search and Rescue, this recent Otago Daily Times article gives insights into how dealing with some events can be so challenging:

The tenacity and courage of Dion Latta, who was trapped upside down under a waterfall for about three hours, and the bravery of his rescuers, has been praised by Otago Southland coroner David Crerar.

An inquest into the death of Dion William Latta 15, in the Motatapu Gorge near Wanaka on January 1 was held in the Alexandra Coroners Court on October 25. Mr Crerar said in 33 years as a coroner, he had never read evidence so harrowing.
